Optimizing Marketing Operations - eMetrics Lite

This session started out with Gary Katz of Marketing Operations Partners running through A LOT of content somewhat quickly.

I didnt write down much of what he said, but I did get his “Top 10″ style list

You know your marketing resources are at risk…..

  1. Your metrics for success are ill-defined
  2. People are slammed
  3. Institutional memory is leaking
  4. Creativity is suffering from constipation
  5. Team & supplier relationships are dysfunctional
  6. Decision making ….(ok so I didnt get them all)
  7. Marketing portfolio is lacking

Next up was Gary Angel of Semphonic and Nancy Abila of O’Reilly.

They talked about the process and used O’Reilly as the example.

Much of the presentation was them talking over slides (go figure, I know) and explaining the ups and downs and the process they went through to move O’Reilly more towards an Analytical Company.  They went over the process of getting buy-in from stakeholders, C-Levels, and everyone else. As this is the Lite version, I have included some of what I wrote down below:

Some of the Challenges they highlighted include:

  • Data integrity
  • Resources (busy teams)
  • Evolving online strategy
  • Changing tools and platforms

What does the Future hold?

  • Continue building the foundation
  • Longer term - continue to educate, process of road map project, and create culture of actionable analytics

Deep Data Diving - eMetrics Lite

I am at eMetrics all week and will post some of my quick session notes as the week goes on. If you want to follow what everyone is seeing, I advise you check out twemes.com.

The first session was: Deep Data Diving - Bringing Online and Offline Inline w/ Rufus Evison.

13 million pieces of mail every quarter using 9 million variables

Data (is meaningless on its own) -> Information (has context) -> Insight (taking actions based on information)

EMetrics

Justification -> Usability -> Information Strategy

Great Example: Someone had said that they did a test of Gap, Macys and (some other store) with a set number of users. Those users were given $1000 to spend and one hour to spend it in. The worst store had only 5% of its users complete the task of making a purchase. The best one only converted 60%. Is this due to usability?

Talks about the McNamara Fallacy… lots of details

Gives some interesting numbers about loyalty cards, shopping habits and the UK.

Recap

- Loyalty cards help us change data -> information

- There is a difference between data and information

There was some Q&A but since this isnt Live Blogging - I didnt take notes for you :)

UPDATE: So that Susan doesnt get mad at me… follow @BruceClayInc for more coverage.

Twitter Link Find V18

Another week, another list. This week ended with some 16 great links that I found on Twitter.

The list this weeks includes SMX, GTA, a GT, and some 101. Enjoy

Humor: The post by Jane and Google Onebox takes the cake this week for me. I dont care what time it was when she wrote it - its funny.

Big Pain: Dogballs sent another great photo to me via Twitpic. This time it wasnt a Tesla or a R8 but a Porsche GT. I am starting to think all the money IS in LA with the constant shots of sports cars he is able to catch - Im a very jealous man of his timing and photos.

Even Bigger Pain: Goes out to Ms blackberry who taunted me today with GTA 4 links via Twitter all day. Thanks Rae - now I want a Xbox360, a PS3 and GTA 4. :)

Twitter Link Find V17

Welcome to another edition of my link find via Twitter. I am a bit late this week but have been super busy working on other (paying) projects - so please forgive.

I have passed the 200 follower mark. It isnt near that of others, but Im not worried. On the other side, I am following some 130 people. More people = great links to find = great for you.

And now, on to the good stuff.

Humor: Im not sure if the video spoof by iJustine was funnier than the Meatloaf image? My vote goes to Meatloaf.

Biggest News: Earthquakes dont just happen in California. I still think I was awaken by the 5.4 earthquake we had here in the midwest last week. It really is scary to know that they dont just happen in Cali.

Best Read: Matt Cutts does a good number of interviews, there are a large number of people working WMW and other forums, but we all still want more. Udi Manber did an interview with Popular Mechanics that you really should read if you havent.

Lesson in Logo Design

The past few months I have been debating how to have some logos designed and have become stuck. I often see logos I like or hate but never can decide on what direction to go. I am so stuck.

As I think about my problem, a friend sent me an email that only gave me more to worry about. When creating a company name or product you have to worry about what it will mean in different languages. Now, not all of us do - but if you plan on going global you had better do your research.

Back to logos and my problem (this is MY blog you know). So Im stuck on what to have the logos look like and I get this email. It has some samples of what could possibly be the best examples of the worst company logos/names. Take a look at the samples below, and learn from their mistakes:

Wow, what can one say. Why didnt they use a hyphen or something?
